Why All Boys Need a Rites of Passage Program

Posted by Thomas on October 28, 2011

Before you continue:

This post has 348 words.

On average, it will take you less than 4 minutes to read.

All boys need a rites of passage program because it offers a sense of clarity that otherwise alludes them when transitioning into manhood.

When raising my son (just like you) I fought daily against the ill-conceived images and definitions of what manhood was. Our world system often times upholds unwholesome characteristics as manhood. That same system often times punishes or degrades our sons for embracing wholesome characteristics of manhood.

Here is an example from my own life. My step-father was an alcoholic. Often times, when he had been drinking, an argument with my mother would turn into a beating. As a child I would go to bed with the arguing, screaming, yelling, pleading, crying, beating in my ears.

The father of my friend next door beat his wife. The father of my friend across the street beat his wife. I too displayed that ill-conceived idea of male power in my late teens and early twenties. That behavior is an extension of our culture, where, in large part, our women are demeaned and objectified.

I had to learn that true responsible male adulthood entailed love and consideration. I had to learn that real men communicated (openly talked) to express feelings not beat the woman they proclaimed to love.

All boys need a rites of passage program to uproot diseased seedlings planted by our culture or even sometimes by the poor examples of men in our families—replacing those unhealthy, unwholesome concepts, behaviors, and attitudes with healthy, wholesome thoughts, attitudes and behaviors—having love for self and others as their ultimate foundations.

Again, all boys need a rites of passage program because it offers a sense of clarity that otherwise alludes them when transitioning into manhood. They come to clearly understand what manhood is and what it should not be.

My free eBook, A Rites of Passage Framework, will be available as a free download on Saturday October 29, 2011. In A Rites of Passage Framework, I offer for your consideration 4 key components to include in the custom designed rites of passage program you create for your son.

Peace,
