Boys' Rites of Passage

The Program

The Journey Part 2

“What does it take to execute a Rites of Passage Program?” This page discusses the Rites of Passage Program.

The Program

The word “program” can be deceiving in that it connotes an institutionalized event. I use that angle but using the family as the institution. Now, as an extension of the family, the “Rites of Passage Program” is an ongoing event put forward by the “family institution”.

The “Program” is the concerted efforts put forth to fulfill the Rites of Passage in full; consisting of lessons, the ceremony, the quest, and the ascension dinner. Our family’s “Program” isn’t, by any means, the “way it should be done”. Actually it’s a mash-up of concepts and ideas I’ve gleaned from conversations with men I respect, reading, and personal research on the subject. Use our “Program” as a model to develop your own. Visit our Resources Links page to gain further insight into Rites of Passage Programs across the nation.

The idea is for you to develop the program that works for the boys in your life. Add to, or take away from our program, in the end you’ll have a customized program that meets the needs of your male youth. Beyond that, I hope you’ll use this site and our experiences as a means to reduce the learning curve. In other words, there is no need to recreate the wheel. Let’s share ideas and from that base build what you need for your sons.

The components of our “Program” are broken out into their own pages.
